Definition of Substance Use Disorder

Substance Use Disorder (SUD):

  1. In May 2013, American Psychiatric Association officially defined SUD as both substance addiction and clinically significant substance abuse.
  2. Substance Use Disorder (SUD): Doctors have begun to use this term in diagnosing patients. SUD is defined as mild, moderate, or severe to indicate the level of severity. Severity is determined by the number of diagnostic criteria met by an individual.
